How to make a card? Let’s start at the beginning and learn a few basics. Here’s another video from MayMay, one of my favorite YouTubers, that answers a beginner’s questions about paper and other cardmaking fundamentals. This video builds on this other video.
To Make a Card You Need to Know About Card Bases and Layers
In this video, MayMay explains how to make a card base. She includes information like cardstock weight, cutting and scoring. Also included is an explanation of the different size layers you can use. Remember layering or matting is optional.
I really enjoy MayMay’s teaching style. She’s informal and gives uncomplicated explanations.
What do I use when I make a card?
Most of my card bases are made on 110# Neenah Solar White card stock. The weight of this paper gives stability to layers, die cuts or other elements I may use on a card. I also stamp or blend directly to the card base if I’m making a simple one-layer card. If I don’t stamp directly to the card base, then I use Neenah 80# Solar White. We’ll talk in other posts about ways to add interest to simple card. The goal of this post was to introduce the foundation of all cards — your card base.
Encouraging Thoughts
Awhile ago I read this quote (author unknown):
Every adventure requires a first step.
How true that is. And, for me learning how to make a card has been and continues to be an adventure. For example, there’s always something new to learn, try a new technique, use a different design or sample a new product or tool. Venture out into this fun craft and let your child-within play.
